STAFF REVIEW of Parkitect: Deluxe Edition (Xbox Series X)

Parkitect: Deluxe Edition Box art A quick scroll through any of my reviews on XboxAddict.com will reveal that I have a passion for simulation games. Although I don’t consider myself a highly creative person, there is always something really Zen about taking an empty space and making something unique with it. The newest sim game to come across my desk is Parkitect: Deluxe Edition from Texel Raptor, published in partnership with Blitworks. Originally released on PC in 2018, it is now available on Xbox consoles.

Since this is the Deluxe Edition of the game, you have the two previously released DLCs, ‘Taste of Adventures’ and ‘Booms & Blooms’. You have two modes to choose from, a campaign and a sandbox mode to enjoy. The campaign has a whopping 46 scenarios to work through, increasing in difficulty as you progress. As you work through the campaign, you will research and unlock items, but if you play the sandbox mode, everything is opened from the beginning. I fully recommend starting with the campaign and tutorial because when I started, I jumped into the sandbox mode and was lost. Throughout the game, there are a total of 87 different rides to build and maintain, meaning there is a lot of content to work with.

Controls were generally okay, a statement that carries across a lot of games that feel like they are geared towards PC versus console. There were times I struggled to have my cursor move where I needed it to be, and sometimes opened tabs would get stuck and I’d have to back all the way out of the game to get to the gameplay area again. Some of the mechanics weren't intuitive either; knowing where to find things wasn't always obvious, and there was wasted time using trial and error to remember where to find certain building components. Building more complicated rides, like the roller coasters, was even more challenging when having to scroll through the bends and loops. There should be a better way to do this on console. Complaints aside, there is something satisfying about seeing park visitors queue up for your newest rides to experience the results you’ve created.

Now, Parkitect isn’t just about the rides. Visitors will need food stalls, bathrooms, drinks, souvenirs, etc. Everything is to keep visitors entertained and the money flowing. You’ll also have to hire and maintain staff for your park. These staff members can be anything from serving customers, to fixing rides, to janitorial staff. Management is all part of your budget and creating a successful park. One mechanic I enjoyed was the fact that staff could use their own footpaths behind the scenes because paying visitors didn’t like seeing staff delivering crates to shops for example.

Audio was calm and was on a repetitive loop. I never found it annoying though, which can happen with some looped simulation games. Rides have their own separate music that you can change in the menus. Sounds within the park are well done. You can hear laughter, chatter and even screams coming from the park visitors.

Graphically, Parkitect is simple and, although not state of the art, completely functional. You know what you’re looking at and it’s easy to understand everything from your perspective. You can even challenge yourself where you're given 10 terrains to choose from, each with its own goals and budgets. This is where you can let your creative mind run free.

I did experience a few save issues with Parkitect. Sometimes, save files disappeared entirely. Other times, the current save just wouldn’t open. This led to a lot of frustration.

While I enjoyed Parkitect, it’s not something I can see myself investing substantial amounts of time in. It’s easy enough to pick up and play for small amounts of time, and that is enjoyable. There just isn’t enough content to really keep me interested for long. That also falls into the statement made at the beginning of this review about me not being highly creative as well.
